What Peterborough Magazine Food Review (April 2008)
Opened last November, the family run business in New road, brings something new to the nighttime mix of the city, offering good food drink at reasonable prices in an upmarket, yet relaxed restaurant.
As you enter there is a bar area, offering a range of fantastic cocktails including the sumptuous Flirtini, which is more for the ladies, so chaps why not try a blue Martini or even a Godfather - a mix of whiskey and amaretto.
Once in the dining area you realise how lavishly it has been designed, while the restaurant is large, it retains an intimate feel through the use of cosmopolitan lighting, blue LCD glass panels and booth seating areas.
Owner Jay explains the vision behind it all: "The restaurant is inspired by our travels, we wanted to bring something alternative to Peterborough, with great fresh food and contemporary elegant surroundings. "To create the element of 'relaxing whilst dining' without being encouraged to rush your meal. We love informal classy dining; this is what makes Latinis a unique experience. The South American region gives us a fantastic range of dishes to develop into Latinis 'signature' dishes."
We started with the stuffed peppers, a Mexican starter which was hot stuff. The fiery jalapenos oozed with a light sour cream cheese that took the edge of the fire in my mouth. They are fried in a light tempura batter and served with a perfectly diced tomato salsa.
We also tried the chargrilled cured Spanish sausage, which is a typical Argentinean dish, served on a bed of rocket salad with a red and green chimmichurri sauce.
Our main courses looked fantastic, the 'Salmones con la salsa de crema de tequila', a seared salmon fillet with a crunchy top served with avocado and rice was delicious, I would never have thought of putting the salmon and avocado together but it is an amazing combination, it just melted in the mouth.
The 'vatapa', a very aromatic and spicy dish of king prawns and shrimp cooked with spiced coconut milk, nutmeg and cashew nuts, served with savoury crispy puree and Cuban rice. Although the ingredients sound rich, the overall dish was light and full of flavours. Every dish is well thought out and perfectly balanced.
The restaurant has all the ingredients for a perfect night out, whether it be intimate dining, a group party or just elegant cocktails with friends and all at great value.
With it being Valentine's this month, the dedicated team have created a special five course meal for £22.50 per person, indulge yourself with champagne on arrival, a choice of starters including Wild Mushroom, goat's cheese & Jalapeno Tart with basil pesto and mains from sea bass, to lamb and roast butternut squash with chilli paneer. And why not finish off by sampling strawberries with white chocolate & shortbread. 01733 891224, 36 New Road, Peterborough.
